An Equinox Prayer to Frey & the Coming of the Sun
On the eve of the vernal equinox, I've been thinking about cycles of death and resurrection. Equinox means that the day will be perfectly balanced, with twelve hours of sun and twelve hours of darkness. What a sublime moment! Who can say they enjoy such a balance in their lives? No wonder it only happens twice a year.
We spend the majority of our time caught in the momentum of a waxing/waning cycle. Today, after six long months (or has it been years??) of darkness, I'm looking forward to the shift into the lighter half of the year. Don't get me wrong, as a Death Worker and a classic Scorpio, I have a deep appreciation for long, cold winter nights. But in this stretch of days when you can /feel/ the light slay the darkness with a victory cry, I am excited to welcome Mighty Inwaz back to hold court.
Frey, one of the Norse Gods I follow, will finally emerge from the death mound he's laid dormant beneath since the autumnal equinox. He will walk the earth again and scatter grain and flowers across the fields, and quicken cold hearts to blossom with passion, peace, and abundance. Personally I have found Frey to be one of the most accessible of the Norse Gods. He's the kind of deity who enjoys sharing wealth and pleasure with all those who seek it with an open mind. His energy feels kind, intimate, and guileless to me.
So if you are so inclined, please join me tomorrow in a little prayer of welcome for Frey and the coming of the sun. Scatter your home altar with flowers and pour a glass of beer or mead in his honor. Think about what kinds of seeds you want to plant now, to grow and ripen over the long hot days ahead.
Hail Frey!
Shining One, Golden Twin
Vannic Priest, Lover of Gerd
Lord of the Alfar, Brother of Freya
Kingseed, Resurrected One
Rain down your blessings upon us today
And in return we will wet our lips with your praise
Hail Frey!
